A Very Brief Introduction to Vim

Vim is not your traditional text editor. Folks my age are very relient on computer mice, and we’re used to removing our hands from the keyboard to click around and get to where we want to go. Vim is a different sort of editor in the respect that all the work is done form the [...]

BMR Calls It Quits, Fast Company Jumps To Conclusions

FastCompany.com posted a pretty interesting read tonight. In it, they reference the BuildMyRank (BMR) blog post, where the BMR founders basically say “It’s been fun, but we’re closing shop…until we can figure out WTF happened to our network.” (Obviously that is paraphrased.) BMR is very well-known in the blackhat world. Don’t ask.

Japan Court Asks Google To Turn Off Auto-Complete For Search

Have you ever typed your name into the Google search box just to see the auto-complete suggestions? You should try it. You might learn something about yourself. When I search my name, I typically see ‘kerry dean seo’, ‘kerry dean photography’ or ‘kerry dean fort worth’. It just depends what letter I type after my name. But what if Google displayed ‘kerry dean criminal history’? That would not be good…at least for me. And as it turns out, something very similar is happening to a dude in Japan. And his lawyer has requested that Google suspends the auto-complete function, claiming that the auto-complete suggestions link him to crimes he did not commit.

Using Blocks in Objective-C

When iOS 4.0 was released, Apple added a new feature to Objective-C, commonly referred to as a parlance block, or just a block. In computer science, blocks are known as lexical closures, but if you’re not a computer scientist, like me, you can just think of it as a function that can be passed as [...]

New Facebook Feature Lets You Easily Turn Friends Into Acquaintances

If you’re anything like me, you probably notice your ‘Friends’ count on Facebook and wonder how you really have that many friends. Or maybe not. Maybe you are super popular and everybody ‘Likes’ you. Great job! But back to me. I’m looking at my Facebook profile, and it says I have 350 “Friends”. In the words of Jon Stewart: “WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT??” How is that even possible? Do I even know 350 people? And then I think about how some of my “Friends” have 1,000+ “Friends” on their respective #FB profiles. Really? Really.

Google Acquires Milk, Digg Founder Kevin Rose to Work on Google+

Recently, Facebook bought location-sharing service Gowalla, shut it down, and used its engineers to help launch the new Facebook Timeline feature. Even more recently, Twitter purchased Posterous, the site that – along with Tumblr – pretty much invented micro-blogging. And now Google has acquired Milk, an idea lab for apps, only to shut it down, and keep several key team members. The most notable is Digg founder, Kevin Rose.

Google Chrome Overtakes Internet Explorer As Top Browser – For One Whole Day!

Statcounter is reporting that Google Chrome overthrew Internet Explorer as the Internet’s top web browser – but just for a day. Yep, it turns out that on Sunday, March 18th, 2012, Google Chrome was the world’s top internet browser. Statcounter ranks the browsers based on data from 3 millions websites (with 15 billion pageviews per month), so I’d say their conclusion is legit to quite legit.

Twitter Turns Six, Reliable Twitter Revenue Model Turns Zero

Happy Birthday, Twitter! I can’t believe it’s been 6 years already. I remember riding in a cab in San Francisco back in 2007, and the two people I was traveling with were constantly messaging on their phones. “It’s called ‘tweeting’, Kerry. It’s not text messaging. We’re on Twitter. It’s awesome. You should try it.” And then I looked down at my Sprint flip phone that I bought in 2004. That phone could barely even make a phone call – much less run any cool Twitter apps! There was no way I was going to be able to join them on Twitter. Cue the Forever Alone meme.

iPad 3 Overheating: A Hot Product With Even Hotter Temperatures

The new iPad 3 is awesome. Seriously. After reading some reviews and comparison guides, it’s pretty clear that Apple continues to remain a step ahead of the competition (or at least at the head of the pack) in nearly every measurable category. However, reports are coming out about the new iPad 3 overheating.
